We feared a left left sprain, and that a ligament would be affected, and finally Robert Williams III suffers from a torn meniscus. Depending on the type of operation (we suture, or we cut the torn part), the absence can be counted in weeks or months. ESPN explains that additional examinations will be carried out to adjust the choice. At a minimum, our colleagues speak of an absence of 7 weeks. Which would mean that, best-case scenario, he’ll be back for the start of the Conference Finals.
It’s a big blow for Boston since its young interior was having its best season in a career, and it had greatly contributed to the return to the forefront of its franchise. In his absence, it is Daniel Theis who should be involved. We can also expect the franchise to test a player before the playoffs.
Last night, Robert Williams III spared no effort, like his monumental counter on Karl-Anthony Towns and his general outpouring of energy to go and defend on exteriors.
Unfortunately for him, his injury exit also reminded us how much his overflowing activity made him an “at risk” profile.
Boston could not fully enjoy its first place in the East after its 134-112 victory over Minnesota after losing its pivot (13 points, 10 rebounds in 24 minutes) to injury. The player told his coach that he had not received a particular blow, which was not necessarily a good sign.
Three long minutes dragging on the floor
“I don’t know exactly what happened. He said it wasn’t even a specific action he remembered, but he came out with some pain. He obviously went back to the locker room to get checked out and he was in quite a bit of pain. We’ll know more after the exams.”had entrusted the coach of the C’s, Ime Udoka, adding that his pivot seemed to suffer on the side of his knee.
In the images, we first see Robert Williams III go up against Jarred Vanderbilt then hit his teammate Derrick White on the way down, and immediately wave his hand, as if to ask for a change, six minutes from the end of the third quarter, even if his gesture is not addressed specifically to the bench of the Celtics. But before that, we had already seen him limp after a move in defense on a piack-and-roll.
The problem is that if the pain was not intense at the time, Robert Williams III then remained three long minutes on the floor, perhaps to try to reassure himself. We can thus see him gradually losing his explosiveness over the possessions, until eventually stopping to be replaced by Daniel Theis. Long moments spent on the floor which may cost him dearly.
Jayson Tatum and Jalyen Brown also on the wire
Ime Udoka already knows that he won’t be able to count on Robert Williams III, nor Al Horford (absent for personal reasons) for tonight’s back-to-back in Toronto. The Boston coach does not rule out resting a few additional players. We think in particular of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, whose participation last night was decided at the last moment, also because of knee pain!
“As for rest, that’s the main thing. We have a few guys who are having some glitches now and you have to be smart about it”he added.
This, even if the three Boston pursuers point to less than a game in the standings, there is no question of questioning everything seven games from the end of an extraordinary second part of the season.
