Ten Hag decision was hard: “This did something to me mentally”

Ryan Gravenberch is having a hard time with the fact that he is no longer sure of a base place since his return from a corona infection. The nineteen-year-old midfielder saw how Steven Berghuis properly fulfilled the role as left midfielder during his absence, but did not see a changing of the guard coming.

When Gravenberch returned to the selection, Erik ten Hag continued to choose Edson Álvarez, Berghuis and Davy Klaassen on the diaphragm. “You don’t see it happening right away,” he is honest to Voetbal International. “Of course, we have a lot of players with a lot of quality, but I didn’t see it happen immediately. If you sit at home without complaints, don’t cough, sneeze, nothing. Yes, then you go a little crazy inside.”

Gravenberch returned to the match selection against FC Twente (5-0), but knew he would not start. “That was difficult for me. I also indicated: I have never really sat on the couch. That this happened then did something mentally.”

After two matches in which the midfielder acted as a substitute, Gravenberch was allowed to start again against Benfica (2-2) and AZ (0-2 win). “You just have to make sure that if you are there, that you are ready for it. Today (Thursday evening against AZ, ed.) I had a basic place again and I think I have filled it in well.”
