Now, shifting gears to the gentlemen’s division, the qualifying rounds were a real nail-biter. Sieskind, Grandmaire, Schurdevin, Maric, Vix, Rufin, and Hernandez – some familiar names, some rising stars. What stood out to you in those early rounds?
Martina: This is where the battle truly begins. Every point is a fight, and you see players leaving everything on the court. Schurdevin looked particularly impressive, strong serves and aggressive baseline play. Maric grinding out that tough win against Picaud was a testament to his grit.
Interesting point about Maric. We saw Vix advance by walkover. Her opponent, Alujas, withdrew.Do you think walkovers are detrimental in the early stages of a tournament?
Martina: It’s unfortunate, definitely. You want to see players competing, testing their skills. A walkover doesn’t give the opponent material to work with or improve upon. Though, injuries and unforeseen circumstances happen.
Martina,what advice would you give to these young players vying for a spot on the main tour?
Martina: Believe in yourself,work harder than everyone else,and never lose sight of your love for the game. This is a tough sport, full of ups and downs.but if you have the passion and the dedication,anything is absolutely possible.
