The Judo-club of La Flèche in Sarthe recently celebrated a significant milestone as Patrick Poulard, a 30-year-old judoka, attained the prestigious rank of black belt. This achievement brings the club’s total number of black belts to an impressive 53. Poulard received his well-deserved recognition on February 28, 2022, at the Petit-Versailles dojo.

Poulard’s journey in judo began just five years ago, sparked by the encouragement of a cousin. He quickly developed a passion for the sport, finding it both challenging and rewarding.

relocating to La Flèche from Montpellier in March 2020, Poulard already possessed a brown belt, signifying his dedication and progress. Earning a black belt was a natural progression for him, a goal he pursued with unwavering commitment. To achieve this, he dedicated six hours each week to rigorous training at the Judo-club.

Over a period of six months, Poulard successfully completed the four essential components required for black belt certification: kata (forms), technique, themed exercises, and arbitration.

Patrick Poulard: Thank you! The initial spark came from my cousin, who encouraged me to give judo a try. I was instantly captivated by the physical and mental challenges it presented. ItS a unique blend of discipline, technique, and strategy that I found incredibly rewarding.

That’s fascinating! Five years is a relatively short timeframe to reach such a high level, especially as you relocated to la Flèche from Montpellier with a brown belt already under your belt.

Patrick Poulard: It definitely required dedication. even while working full-time, I committed to six hours of rigorous training each week at the Judo-club. The strong sense of community and the incredible coaching staff at La flèche Judo Club were instrumental in my progress.

Each component demanded a different type of focus. Kata, the formal techniques and forms, required precision and memorization. Technique involved honing my throws, holds, and ground fighting skills, demanding physical strength and agility. The themed exercises tested my adaptability and problem-solving abilities in various sparring scenarios. arbitration challenged me to understand and apply the rules of judo objectively.

Embrace the challenge! Judo is a demanding but incredibly rewarding sport. Find a dojo with experienced instructors who foster a supportive environment. Commit to consistent training, be patient with your progress, and never stop learning. Remember, the journey is just as notable as the destination.
