The boom in women’s football in France is confirmed

After a drop linked to Covid-19, the number of licensees recorded by the FFF has rebounded strongly this season.

On the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day on Tuesday, the French Football Federation published its latest figures on the development of women’s football in France. After a drop in 2020-2021 that the FFF explains by the health situation, the number of licensees has risen sharply with an increase of 15.5% over one year. As of March 2, 2022, the Federation recorded 197,779 licensees, including 163,717 players (compared to 141,279 a year earlier). These figures confirm the boom in women’s football in France over the past ten years. In 2010-2011, the FFF recorded less than 90,000 licensees.

If it remains far from the United States (1.7 million licensees identified in 2019), France is slowly approaching other nations where women’s football is very popular such as Canada (289,000) and Germany (210,000). Noël Le Graët and the FFF are aiming for 250,000 licensees in 2024. Last December, during its general assembly, the Federation indicated that it had “returned to the pre-Covid level with two million licensees (men and women combined)“. This figure had fallen to 1.9 million as of June 30, 2020.
