The Caribbean table tennis championship begins in Havana

Havana, March 2 (EFE).- Players from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Cuba will cheer on the 62nd edition of the Caribbean Table Tennis Championship, which will be played in Havana. Havana from this Thursday and until next March 8.
International and Olympic medalists are among the participants in this qualifying event in the individual category for the Pan American Championships next October, based in Santiago, Chile, and for the 2023 World Championships.
The championship will include women’s and men’s team, doubles and individual competitions for seniors, according to the Latin American Table Tennis Union (ULTM) on its website.
The Dominican Republic will bring to the contest players like Eva Brito, Yasiris Ortiz and Esmerlyn Castro, with a path traveled on the international circuit, together with the young promise Shary Muñoz.
The Puerto Rican team led by the gold medalist of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, Daniely Ríos, brings together Fabiola Díaz, Briana Burgos and Kristal Meléndez.
In the men’s category, the Dominican representation will have Samuel Gálvez, Abit Tejada and Eduardo Darley, and the Puerto Rican squad will be made up of Daniel González, Richard Pietri Ángel Naranjo and Oscar Birriel.
Among other well-known competitors, the Olympic flag bearer from Guyana in Tokyo 2020, Chelsea Edghill, will attend the Caribbean event, accompanied by her compatriots Trenace Lowe and Shemar Britton.
The Cuban hosts will compete with their best figures, among them, the Olympics Jorge Campos and Daniela Fonseca, and the experienced Idalys Lovet, as well as Andy Pereira and Liván Martínez, who play under contract to foreign clubs.
The previous edition of the Caribbean championship was held in Guyana in 2019, where the Dominican Emil Santos won gold for the second consecutive year and the Cuban Daniela Fonseca won her first international title in the senior category.
