Manchester City won the second Manchester Derby of the season. City secured three points after beating Manchester United with a final score of 4-1.
The Man City vs MU duel was held at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday (6/3/2022). Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez inspire victory the Citizens after contributing two goals each, while the only goal for MU came from Jadon Sancho in the first half.
Manchester City took the lead through De Bruyne’s quick goal, although Manchester United equalized thanks to Sancho’s strike. De Bruyne put the home side in front late in the first half, then Mahrez sealed City’s win with his goal after halftime.
With this result, Man City is still firmly at the top of the Premier League standings. City have 69 points from 28 games, six points clear of bottom Liverpool who have played just 27 games. Meanwhile, MU came out of the top four by placing fifth after collecting 47 points from 28 matches.

The course of the match
Manchester City immediately surprised MU with a quick goal in the fifth minute. Starting from an attack from the left flank, Jack Grealish’s pass to Bernardo Silva ended with a low cross which Kevin de Bruyne finished with a shot into the bottom corner.

Man City almost created his second goal in the 18th minute. After Pogba lost the ball on the right wing, City took the ball and it was controlled by Kevin de Bruyne. The last named player fired a shot from inside the penalty box towards the far post although David de Gea could counter it.
Man City also claimed a penalty in that build-up play. Following Harry Maguire’s tight escort to Phil Foden, Foden fell. However, the referee did not consider the incident as a foul.
MU evened the score to 1-1 in the 22nd minute. Quick counter-attack driven by Bruno Fernandes, the ball was passed to Paul Pogba. Pogba’s pass was accepted by Sancho, then he slowed the tempo before finishing with an accurate shot into the bottom corner of Ederson’s goal.
Manchester City took the lead again six minutes later. De Bruyne again scored City’s goal to make it 2-1.
After Elanga’s pass was cut, Foden controlled the ball well to get into the MU defense. Foden’s final finish could be ignored by De Gea, the rebound was continued by Bernardo Silva and then blocked by Maguire. The vomit ball fell in the path of De Bruyne who without error netted into the top corner of the MU goal.
In the 40th minute, Man City again threatened. De Bruyne stepped forward and sent Foden a fine cross which was finished with a low effort. The ball is still off the mark.
David de Gea made a fine save just before half-time. Riyad Mahrez dribbled on the edge of the box then finished with a low shot that was stopped by De Gea.
Ahead of the break, MU created a chance from a corner kick. Harry Maguire’s header from in front of goal could be caught by Ederson.
Manchester City continued to press MU in the early minutes of the second half. United hit back on the hour mark, but Joao Cancelo broke United’s strike before Elanga finished.
Fred’s foul on Mahrez earned Man City a free kick in front of the D area. De Bruyne made the execution, his shot through the MU fence but was easily caught by De Gea.
The third goal that Man City had been waiting for was finally created in the 68th minute. Riyad Mahrez changed City’s advantage to 3-1 from MU.
De Bruyne sent a corner kick from the left wing, which fell on the right side of the United penalty box. Mahrez responded with a first-time shot from the bottom corner of the goal, which De Gea couldn’t reach.
Manchester City again troubled Manchester United’s defense. In the last 10 minutes, Joao Cancelo fired an overhead shot that was aimed at the far post but was saved by De Gea.
In the final minutes of the game, Mahrez scored against MU for the second time. However, the goal was initially ruled out because he was deemed offside. However, after being checked via VAR, Mahrez was onside so the goal was legal. City now lead 4-1 over Manchester United.
