“We regret and condemn these events, which run counter to the spirit of our football,” the Mexican Football Federation said in a statement.

Saturday’s match between the home team Querétas and the champion Atlas was interrupted in the 62nd minute at 0: 1 due to a mass skirmish of fans of both camps. The security service cleared the entrance to the field so that the other spectators could escape from the stands.

The players of the visiting team managed to escape to the locker rooms, some of the footballers of the home team tried to calm down the spectators. Querétaro authorities reported 23 injured fans, ten of whom were in serious condition and three in critical condition. El Universal called the incident “the darkest day of Mexican football.”

Querétáro Governor Mauricio Kuri condemned the violence, saying the club must be held accountable for what happened. Competition boss Mike Arriola said the league was likely to implement biometric or facial recognition systems in stadiums.

“We need to put in place digital security measures to identify those involved in the matches,” Arriola said, mentioning organized fan clubs, which are often involved in violence. At Tuesday’s club owners ‘meeting, he will propose that fans of these groups be excluded from participating in their teams’ outdoor matches.
