In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it was announced last weekend that the planned “Formula 1” stage in Sochi this season will not take place.
Meanwhile, Leonid Kostyuchenko, president of the Ukrainian Motorsport Federation, has called on the FIA to ban Russian and Belarusian citizens from participating in FIA-supervised motor racing. In response to this call, FIA President Mohamed Ben Sulayem has convened a WMSC meeting to discuss the issues.
Yesterday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) also recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes not be allowed to take part in international competitions in the future. The IOC and the FIA began working closely in 2012.
If a decision is made against Russia at the WMSC meeting, Nikita Mazepin and Danil Kvyat will be left without the opportunity to participate in the F1 World Championship this year. Rally driver Alexei Lukyanuk has already announced that he will not take part in the race during the war.
