One of the mothers of López Diéguez Zahira Salamanca He explained that “with these activities and this concentration we intend to raise awareness in the neighborhood and the population of Cordoba to be able to have a city and neighborhoods that are friendlier to children, an environment where they can play and go to school without worrying neither the children nor the parents” .
Salamanca has highlighted this school is the first public school in Córdoba to join the state movement school riot and with their adhesion they intend to “motivate and encourage other centers to join this movement, in order to have safer and more sustainable neighbourhoods, since pollution is also a danger for youth”.
“The initiative began more than a year ago, in the 2020-2021 academic year, when a survey was carried out with mothers and fathers to see the needs that existed around the school, to give more space to safer roads so that boys and girls go to school calmly, and be responsible with the environment, creating a sustainable environment for the neighbors”, he pointed out.
The family association carried out a survey among the parents of the students on how they accessed the center and more than 80% answered that they walked to school, while 5% used the bicycle, while 6% went by car.
Now the challenge is improve access routes to schoolto reduce the risks pointed out by the families and gain space for pedestrians on the city streets, so that citizens also reduce car trips and use more sustainable means, such as cycling.
“With the Departments of Education and Mobility of the City Council, the installation of pedestrian priority signs, speed limits of 20 kilometers per hour, overhangs, bollards and streets have been closed to traffic have been achieved,” he indicated.
Another of the measures that he has cited has been the change of location of containers to improve visibility at intersections and reduce risks, the painting of pedestrian crossings highlighting that they are paths to school and the safe routes to the López Diéguez school have been marked by means of vertical signs. in the shape of pencils.
After that, this mother has asked that this motivation and these changes can reach other neighborhoods and schools, that they can join this campaign and have a welcoming and child-friendly city, while sustainable with the environment.
