The only Swede to play in the NBA is denied a seat in the national team on a contract with Moscow’s CSKA / Article

The Swedish Basketball Federation emphasized that it had contacted 35-year-old Jerebko and informed him of his position. Jerebko signed a contract with Moscow’s CSKA the day before. In the Swedish Basketball Federation, he explained that Jerebko’s actions contradicted the values represented by the federation and explained his position against Russia.

“Following this dialogue, we regret that Jonas Jerebko is unable to represent the national team,” the Swedish Basketball Federation said. “The player represents the Swedish Basketball Federation in the national team.”

Jerebko spent 10 seasons in the NBA, representing the Detroit Pistons, Utah Jazz, Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors. In the Swedish national team, Jerebko played his last game in the World Cup qualifiers against Croatia at the end of February. At that time, the Swedish Basketball Federation and the players expressed their support for Ukraine.

Prior to signing the contract with CSKA, Jerebko was without a club. His contract with another Russian club, Khimki, expired in 2021.

Due to the war started by Russia, Moscow’s CSKA has been banned from playing in the Euroleague.
