The Paralympic flame lit in Stoke Mandeville, near London

The Paralympic flame for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games was lit on Monday in Stoke Mandeville, a village in northwest London known as the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.

It was in Stoke Mandeville that the German-born British neurologist Ludwig Guttmann organized an archery competition with 16 wheelchair patients in a hospital, the very day of the opening of the London Olympics in 1948.

The Beijing Paralympic Winter Games will open on March 4 and close on March 13.
