On February 14, the Pistons lost in Washington after another poor performance. It was then their 8th defeat in a row and the 12th in 13 matches. Moment chosen by Dwane Casey, who decided that it was necessary to take stock, to stop the bleeding.
In the locker room after the match, the coach therefore tells these players that it’s time to talk. Everyone can say what they want, whether positive or negative.
“It was a decisive moment”recalls Saddiq Bey for The Athletic. “We put the cards on the table, we talked about the essential subjects. We said everything and it had an impact afterwards, without even noticing it. »
Casey’s troops have indeed won four out of six games since that day, including two big wins against the Celtics and the Raptors. This reunion clearly did the young Pistons some good.
“As we are competitors, there is frustration during the season”notes Cade Cunningham. “But the coach does something very well: he puts everything on the table. We talk, we say what’s on our minds, like that, we move forward without resentment and we continue to work. »
“A coach who allows us to make mistakes”
This management is essential for Dwane Casey. Because the Pistons are a very young group and in the face of accumulating defeats, the coach must continue to keep his workforce involved and motivated. You have to think about the long term, to adopt good habits, without being discouraged by victories that are long overdue.
“The coach did a remarkable job of showing us our learning,” continues Saddiq Bey. “When we see the progress, then we believe in it, we are more welded, it’s human. When progress is visible, it helps for morale. He is very good at forcing us to focus on the little things. It puts us in a position to progress, we have no other choice, we have to live these experiences. »
The many setbacks will, in a way, form this team for the future.
“He is a coach who allows us to make mistakes”, relate Isaiah Stewart. “If we make mistakes, we know we can talk to him about it. I can even discuss it with him before doing it. No matter the conditions, he responds. He doesn’t want us to refrain from asking questions if we don’t understand certain things. »
