More than 80 universities and 7,000 athletes will participate in this event, organized by the UCAM and celebrating its 25th anniversary
The UCAM will organize the Spanish University Championships (CEU) of twenty of the twenty-seven possible sports on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its foundation. These events will bring together more than 7,000 university athletes from all over the country in the Region of Murcia between the months of March, April and May.
The municipalities that will host the competitions are Murcia (paddle tennis, tennis, football, rugby and athletics), Cartagena (swimming and karate), Lorca (cross country), Las Torres de Cotillas (badminton and judo), San Javier (futsal, handball and basketball), Los Alcázares (beach volleyball, futsal, handball, wrestling, volleyball, table tennis and taekwondo) and San Pedro del Pinatar (fencing, triathlon and judo).
“The championships will be spread throughout a large part of the Region, both in the capital and in the interior and on the coast, which also represents a significant boost to hotel occupancy and tourist spending in the low season,” explained the Minister of the Presidency , Tourism, Culture and Sports, Marcos Ortuño, who participated in the presentation of the competition together with the rector of the UCAM, Josefina García Lozano.
“Sports competitions have themselves become a powerful pole of tourist attraction, which contributes very positively to the tourist image of the host destination and I am sure that the Region will know how to take advantage of this opportunity that comes from the UCAM,” he added.
World-class figures
Josefina García highlighted the contribution of the Catholic University to the image of the Region of Murcia with the organization of these twenty tests: «Once again the UCAM seeks social contribution through sport. These championships suppose an injection of the projection of our land and of the socioeconomic activity».
Pablo Rosique gave some details about the organization, highlighting that «it is the first time that a university organizes twenty Spanish championships in the same year. The final phases of team sports, which until now were eight teams, have now grown to twenty teams. In addition, antigen tests will be carried out on all athletes in order to obtain the maximum security guarantees.
Regarding the sporting objectives, the Catholic University wants to beat all the records in the national university sports medal table. For this, it has a luxury university team that includes Olympic athletes such as the swimmer Mireia Belmonte, the karateka Damián Quintero, the athletes María Pérez, Diego García Carrera and Miguel Ángel López or the fencer Carlos Llavador, among others.
Lorca opens with cross country
In Lorca, the 2022 Spanish University Championships will be kicked off with the cross country (March 2). Andreu Blanes leads the UCAM team again in this test and will be one of the main contenders for gold.
Lorca City Council welcomed the presentation of this test that places the City of the Sun as the starting point for this year’s competitions. Diego José Mateos, Mayor Lorca, was excited to host this competition in which 181 runners representing 34 universities will participate: «For us it is a luxury and an honor that UCAM, the watchword of sport at a national level, has set in Lorca to carry out a University Spain Championship. Investing in sport is not spending, it is making an investment in the future, values and positioning, for which we are delighted.
