The South Tyrolean tennis world is standing still: Jannik Sinner had the great opportunity to reach the semi-finals at the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami on Wednesday. Instead, things turned out very differently: The sextner had to give up after only five games due to injury.

This is the second time in a row that Sinner has canceled a tournament prematurely. Last week he did not appear in his round of 16 match at the Masters in Indian Wells because he was plagued by the flu. Well, after two hard-fought games against Emil Ruusuvuori and Pablo Carreno Busta and the great win against Nick Kyrgios, the body is on strike again. Blisters on his feet are said to have led to the withdrawal, it was leaked. The same thing happened to the 20-year-old in 2020 at the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna against Andrey Rublev.

His opponent Francisco Cerundolo had just played two (!) hard court games on the ATP Tour before the tournament – and lost both. In Florida, however, the knot is now bursting: First he defeated Tallon Griekspoor, then he benefited from Reilly Opelka’s surrender before he convincingly defeated Gael Monfils and Frances Tiafoe, after all Nos. 24 and 31 in the world. Thanks to Sinner’s resignation, he is now promptly in the semi-finals of his first Masters tournament – an unbelievable story.

Short pleasure

About the game: With a score of 1: 2 and 40: 0 for Sinner, the few spectators in the Hard Rock Arena got the first impression that something was wrong. Suddenly, Sinner barely moved, played briefly and served slowly. After Cerundolo pulled away 4-1, the shock followed: The world number 11. was forced to give up. He shook Cerundolo’s hand and left the square without having achieved anything. Individual boos accompanied Sinner’s departure.
