They Call Me Magic is the Apple TV + documentary about Magic Johnson

Apple has released the first trailer for “They Call Me Magic”, a documentary coming to Apple TV + about the life of Earvin Johnson Jr., better known as “Magic Johnson”, former American basketball player, basketball coach, entrepreneur and sports executive, considered one of the greatest players in basketball history.

The spot shows that it’s a four-part documentary, a miniseries about Johnson’s basketball career and beyond. It starts from where the nickname “Magic” was born, gradually coming to dissect his private life as an entrepreneur, his commitments in the fight against AIDS and activism and in politics.

The documentary brings together various shots, his interviews and those with various protagonists of the sport, including names such as Shaquille O’Neil, Michael Jordan, but also personalities such as Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J and Snoop Dogg, the former President of the States. United, Barack Obama and others.

The documentary is directed by Rick Famuyiwa, accompanied by author Dirk Westervelt and director of photography Rachel Morrison; is produced for Apple by XTR and New Slate Ventures, in collaboration with H. Wood Media and Delirio Films.

“They Call Me Magic” was announced in February and the trailer circulated after the documentary debuted as part of the SXSW Film Festival 2022. The Apple TV + premiere is scheduled for April 22.
