Trevon and Stefon Diggs playing together for the Cowboys?

Trevon and Stefon Diggs playing together for the Cowboys?

The NFL’s free agency in 2022 has so far delivered surprising moves when it comes to receivers. Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins, Davante Adams to the Raiders, Amari Cooper to the Browns… However, another receiver may be the star of the market. Such is the case of Stefon Diggs, who is said to be reunited with his younger brother Trevon on the Dallas Cowboys.

According to rumors, Stefon could be looking for a new contract, either with the Bills or with another team. It appears the 28-year-old wide receiver will want to emulate the deals struck by Hill and Adams in current free agency. And while he still has two years left on his contract with Buffalo, Diggs posted a cryptic tweet on Thursday saying “It’s always business, it’s never personal.” This, in fact, would imply his intentions and his economic aspirations.

Although the tweet seems irrelevant, the oldest of the Diggs brothers has a history on the matter. In 2020, when he was still a player for the Minnesota Vikings, Stefon posted a tweet saying “it was time for a fresh start.” After that he followed up by trading him to the Buffalo Bills, with whom he is contracted through 2023. So Stefon may be anticipating his trade wishes again.

While those may just be rumours, some pretty blunt tweets from Trevon Diggs got quite a bit of attention. This Saturday, the Cowboys cornerback posted a tweet saying he has always wanted to play on the same team with his brother Stefon. Trevon then said what it would be like for his brother to play in Dallas.

Following the Amari Cooper trade to the Browns, the Cowboys’ No. 1 receiver job this year looks to belong to CeeDee Lamb. However, there are those who consider that the #88 of Dallas would not be ready to assume that role yet. Therefore, adding a veteran like Stefon Diggs could be a very important addition to the cowboy offense.

Chosen in the fifth round of the 2015 Draft, Stefon had a productive time with Minnesota. In five seasons, the oldest of the Diggs brothers had 365 receptions for 4,623 yards and 30 touchdowns. All this in 70 games, 63 of them as a starter. One of his most memorable plays with the Vikings occurred in the 2017 playoffs against the Saints, a game later known as the “Minneapolis miracle.”

However, Stefon’s definitive explosion would occur in Buffalo, a team he arrived in 2020. The receiver has been key in the explosion of the Bills’ offense, led by quarterback Josh Allen. In two seasons, Diggs has posted 230 receptions for 2,760 yards and 18 touchdowns. This earned him his selection to the Pro Bowl both seasons, as well as his selection to the All-Pro First Team in 2020.

Although Diggs has become a key player in the Bills’ attack, the recent free-agent trades may have sparked in him the idea of looking for a new contract. And if this involves a trade, one of his possible destinations could be Dallas.

Is it possible the arrival of Stefon Diggs to the Cowboys?

At the moment, there are no confirmed reports about an intention of Stefon Diggs to want a trade or a new contract. However, Trevon’s tweets this Saturday sparked rumors about the possibility of bringing the Diggs brothers back to the Cowboys.

Now how likely is this to happen?

First of all, the Dallas front office may have already decided that CeeDee Lamb will be their No. 1 receiver this year. Besides, after trading Amari Cooper for a salary issue and extending Michael Gallup, it seems unlikely the Cowboys will make a financial effort to sign Stefon. Even more so, remembering that the cowboy team maintains its approach of not making big moves in free agency.

Besides, incorporating the oldest of the Diggs brothers could be expensive. Stefon’s salary in Buffalo for this year is $13.56 million, and in 2023 it will go up a bit to $13.65 million. While these are numbers Dallas could handle, the veteran receiver may be looking for a salary similar to that of Tyreek Hill with Miami ($30 million a year on average) or Davante Adams with Las Vegas ($28.8 million a year).

There is no doubt that seeing Stefon and Trevon Diggs playing together for the Cowboys would be something that many want. And while the leadership’s financial focus makes this impossible at the moment, it may not be totally out of the question. If NFL free agency has shown anything, and more so in recent days, it’s that anything can happen. Therefore, it remains to wait for what happens in this regard.
