The “Twilight” Baseball Scene: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at a Fan Favorite
The iconic baseball scene in Twilight has captivated fans since the film’s release. Featuring the Cullen family showcasing their superhuman abilities in a thrilling game, the scene is a visual and auditory masterpiece. But behind the cool exterior, the filming process was anything but smooth.
Ashley Greene, who portrayed Alice Cullen, recently shed light on the challenges of bringing this iconic scene to life. In a candid interview, she revealed the uncertainty and apprehension that surrounded the filming.
“It was a bit chaotic and it was raining,” Greene admitted. “We where, as a cast, kind of like, ‘What is this going to be? Is this going to be good?’ There was a bit of uncertainty around it. I lied, I don’t know how to play baseball and I said, ‘Will this look good?’ wouldn’t you know that it turns out to be this kind of iconic moment for Alice?”
Adding to the complexity was director Catherine Hardwicke’s unique artistic vision. While Greene praised Hardwicke’s brilliance, she acknowledged the director’s less structured approach, which made it arduous for the cast to envision the final product.”Catherine is brilliant, but she’s an artist, so it’s a bit chaotic and less structured on set, which is why we didn’t get to see this finished version,” Greene explained. “That particular scene for me is one that I’m like, good heavens, it turned out fantastic and I never would have imagined it in the days we were shooting it.Part of that is the editing, part of that is the music, part of that was the genius that Catherine is.”
Hardwicke herself faced numerous hurdles, notably with the unpredictable weather. Filming during the winter months, when cloud cover was abundant, was crucial to avoid the vampires sparkling in sunlight. However, rain posed a significant challenge, threatening to ruin the intricate makeup and hairstyles.
“We were shooting in the winter as that’s when there are the most clouds,” Hardwicke shared. “We couldn’t have a radiant sun because then the vampires would have to shine. We didn’t want them to shine all the time, we couldn’t afford it. CGI sparks cost a lot of money. The weather did not cooperate. And you can’t have pouring rain [as of] all makeup drips; hair. They just don’t look like the cool vampires in the pouring rain.”
Despite the obstacles,Hardwicke and the cast persevered, ultimately delivering a scene that has become synonymous with the Twilight franchise. The baseball scene remains a testament to the power of creative vision, teamwork, and a little bit of movie magic.
