On March 12 and 13, the first major outdoor athletics competition in Europe, the European Throwing Cup, took place this spring in the Portuguese city of Leiria. This competition is being held for the 18th time and is taking place in javelin, discus and hammer throwing.
Rolands Štrobinders, an athlete from the Ventspils Olympic team, took part in the adult javelin throwing competition, and Matīss Kaudze, an athlete from the sports school “Spars” and the Ventspils High Class Athlete Training Center, took part in the U-23 age group.
Rolands Štrobinders took the eighth place with the result 74.92 m (71.28 – x – 71.01 – 71.28 – 74.92 – 72.94). 17 participants took part in the adult competition and the first place was won by Aleksandrs Novaks (Romania) with the result 80.49m.
Matīss Kaudze exceeded the limit of 60 meters with the last, sixth throw and with the result 61.53 m (58.29 -57.41 – x -55.14 – 59.40 – 61.53) took the 10th place. 12 participants started in the U-23 age group and the first place was won by Teuraiterais Tupaias (France) with the result 77.21m.

In order to promote the growth of the results of high-class athletes, Ventspils City Municipality supports a training program for high-class athletes, which in 2022 includes 25 athletes, allocating funding of Ventspils City Municipality in the amount of 55,000 euros. The importance of this program is proved by the participation of Ventspils-supported athletes in the Olympic Games, world and European championships. With the support of the program, athletes are provided with sports facilities and other financial and organizational support.
