Max Verstappen has officially extended his contract at Red Bull Racing. The reigning Formula 1 champion will last until 2028.
Verstappen, 24, still has a contract with Red Bull until 2023. But along with his success in becoming world champion last season, a long-term contract was immediately offered.
Reported by the BBC, the value of Verstappen’s salary immediately shot up compared to last season. He will earn between 33.3 – 41.7 million Pounds per year, or around Rp. 638.9 – 800.2 billion. For comparison, the highest paid driver at the moment is Lewis Hamilton, who is paid £40 million per season by Mercedes.
“I love this team and last year’s results were absolutely amazing. Our goal since we started working together in 2016 was to become world champions and we did it. The target now is to keep it for longer,” said Verstappen.
“The extension of Max’s contract with Red Bull Racing until 2028 is a real sign of sincerity. Our focus is on getting Max to retain the title, but this deal also shows he is part of the team’s long-term plans,” said Red Bull boss Christian Horner.
Verstappen has appeared in F1 since 2015 while defending Scuderia Toro Rosso. He was only 17 years old at the time. A year later, he was promoted to Red Bull and remains to this day. Throughout his career, Verstappen has won 20 wins and 60 podiums.
