Ron Vlaar will say goodbye to the Alkmaar public on Thursday before the match between AZ and Ajax. ‘Ron Beton’ himself hadn’t counted on that, he admits honestly.
Vlaar stopped playing football a year ago and due to circumstances it never came to a goodbye. “It does mean something to me that I now get my farewell. I was called last week if I was open to it. I didn’t have to think about it that long,” says Vlaar. ESPN.
“I thought I had closed the book, but when I got the question it turned out not to be. Now I can really close it. I knew the club wanted it, because they had said so before. But the circumstances were not optimal” , Vlaar refers to the corona situation. “I am now active in the youth and thought it was ready. Now it is really ‘done’ and it was quite difficult with that. It is special, it really means something to me.”
Vlaar (37) played in two periods for AZ: from 2004 to 2006 and 2015 to 2021. He also played for Feyenoord and Aston Villa and wore the shirt of the Dutch national team 32 times.
