A Rugby Legend’s Courage Amidst the Ukrainian Conflict
The ongoing war in ukraine has sparked remarkable displays of bravery and resilience, with individuals from all walks of life stepping up to defend their nation. One such story involves Giorgi Dzanghirian,an 83-year-old former rugby player and president of the Ukrainian Rugby Federation.
Dzanghirian, who played for the modest Sokil Rugby club in Lviv, a city in western Ukraine, has chosen to face the conflict head-on. News of his courage was initially shared by his former club on Facebook and later amplified by Octavian Morariu, the Romanian president of Rugby Europe, on Twitter.
Sokil Rugby Lviv, a team with a storied past, having been USSR vice-champion multiple times in the 1980s, has also demonstrated unbelievable solidarity with its fellow Ukrainians. Ten days ago, the club announced its headquarters would serve as a temporary shelter for those seeking refuge in western Europe. They are providing essential aid, including beds and meals, to those fleeing the conflict.
Tragically,Dzanghirian’s story is not unique. The war has claimed the lives of several Ukrainian athletes, including Mykita Bobrov, a young rugby player who was fatally shot near Kyiv. Bobrov’s death, mourned by the Rugby Europe president, highlights the devastating impact of the conflict on the sporting community.
Similarly, Yehven Zvonok, a Ukrainian kickboxing champion and World Cup runner-up, was killed in Chernihiv during russian bombardments on March 3rd. These losses underscore the indiscriminate nature of the violence and the profound grief felt across Ukraine.
The war has also forced many athletes to flee their homes. Yulia Ivaniva, a badminton player based in Caen, France, was compelled to leave Kyiv with her daughter, seeking refuge in Romania. She was forced to leave her husband behind, who is unable to leave the country.
