A Football Legend’s Plea: Shevchenko Urges Italy to Aid Ukrainian Refugees
Former football star Andrei Shevchenko, visibly emotional, made a heartfelt appeal for support for ukrainian refugees on Italian television.Appearing on teh popular talk show “Che tempo che fa” on Rai, the 45-year-old, who once graced the pitches of AC Milan and Chelsea, expressed his deep gratitude for the warmth and acceptance he experienced in Italy during his playing days.
“Italy opened its heart to me when I arrived,” Shevchenko shared, his voice thick with emotion. He then implored viewers,”I beg you,Italians,open your hearts to my people. Please help the women, children, and elderly who are desperately in need of your assistance.”
Shevchenko, who recently coached CFC Genoa before his departure in mid-January, has strong ties to Ukraine. Born near Kyiv, he played for Dynamo Kyiv and proudly represented his nation 111 times on the international stage.
Speaking from his London residence, Shevchenko revealed the agonizing reality of the situation. His mother, sister, and other relatives remain in Ukraine, enduring the terrifying reality of relentless bombing raids. “I’m incredibly worried,” he confessed, his voice laced with concern.
The former striker passionately called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. “We need all parties to come together,lay down their arms,and find a solution to end this war,” he urged. He admitted to moments of disbelief, wishing it were all a nightmare. “But then I realize, this is our harsh reality,” he stated solemnly.
Shevchenko emphasized his ongoing interaction with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office and boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, highlighting the unwavering spirit of the Ukrainian people. “We are defending our rights, our country, our freedom,” he declared. “This was a decision made by the Ukrainian people. We aspire to become part of Europe.”
Even before the recent Milan derby, Shevchenko had used his platform to advocate for peace.In a video message shown before the cup semi-final first leg, he eloquently stated, “The Ukrainian people yearn for nothing more than peace. Peace transcends borders. What unites us must be stronger than what divides us.” His plea was clear: “let’s end this war together.”

Shevchenko: It’s a pleasure to be here. Thank you for having me.
We can’t ignore the elephant in the room. The situation in Ukraine weighs heavily on everyone’s minds right now. Your passionate plea for support on Italian television resonated deeply with people worldwide. Can you tell us more about what inspired you to speak out, and what message do you hope to convey?
Shevchenko: It was truly a spontaneous outpouring of emotion. Italy was my home for many years, and I felt It was important to express my gratitude for the warmth and acceptance I received while playing there. But more importantly, I wanted Italians to understand the desperate situation my people are facing. The images coming out of Ukraine are horrific, and I know that many innocent people are suffering immensely. My own family – my mother, sister, relatives – are still in Ukraine, enduring the relentless bombing. This isn’t just a conflict; it’s a humanitarian crisis.
You mentioned your family.How do you cope with the worry and fear, knowing they are in harm’s way?
Shevchenko: It’s incredibly difficult. Every day, I wake up with a heavy heart, hoping and praying that my loved ones are safe. I try to stay in constant contact with them, but dialog is often interrupted. The fear is always there, gnawing away at you. But I try to be strong, for them and for the Ukrainian people.
You’ve also been vocal about the need for peace, advocating for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. Do you believe a peaceful resolution is still possible?
Shevchenko: I have to believe it is indeed. We must never give up hope. This war needs to end. The bloodshed, the destruction, the suffering – it must stop. All parties involved need to come to the negotiating table, lay down their arms, and work towards a peaceful agreement that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and its right to self-determination.
This is not just a Ukrainian issue; it’s a global concern that demands our collective attention and action. What can the international community do to help de-escalate the situation and support those affected by the conflict?
Shevchenko: The international community can play a vital role in bringing this war to an end. Sanctions against Russia need to be strengthened and enforced, and all forms of military support for Ukraine must be accelerated.
But even more importantly,we need humanitarian aid to reach those in desperate need. Millions have been displaced,fleeing their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs. they need food, water, shelter, and medical care. The world must step up and answer the call for help.
The situation is incredibly complex, with many differing opinions and interpretations of what’s happening in Ukraine. What message would you like to leave our readers with today?
Shevchenko: I want people to remember the human cost of this war. Countless lives have been lost, and countless more have been shattered forever.This isn’t about politics or ideology. It’s about people, families, and children caught in the crossfire. We need to stand united in our condemnation of this senseless violence and work together to find a peaceful resolution.
