the serene atmosphere of the PSG training center in Bougival was shattered this week by the ongoing tragedy unfolding in Ukraine. Didier Ollé-Nicolle, coach of the PSG women’s team, expressed his deep concern and solidarity wiht the Ukrainian people, reflecting on the team’s recent visit to Kharkiv for a Champions League match just months before the war began.
“I had a premonition about this conflict,” Ollé-Nicolle admitted, recalling his unease in the weeks leading up to the invasion. “When dealing with Putin, anything seems possible.” Witnessing the devastation in Kharkiv,a city they visited just months ago,has left a profound impact on the coach and the entire team.
He remembers the resilience and pride of the Ukrainian people they encountered, facing daily hardships even before the war. “They are a proud nation, defending thier homeland,” Ollé-Nicolle stated, emphasizing his unwavering support for Ukraine. “I stand with them, and I will do whatever I can to help, whether through football or any other means.”
The coach’s words where filled with emotion as he spoke about the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. “It’s heartbreaking to see children, women, and civilians targeted by bombs,” he said, his voice heavy with grief. “We met some of these people, and the feeling of helplessness is overwhelming.” Ollé-Nicolle praised athletes who are using their platform to speak out against the war and call for peace.
The PSG women’s team, with its diverse roster including players from countries bordering Ukraine,is deeply affected by the conflict. Paulina Dudek, a Polish player, recently celebrated a goal with a message of peace, demonstrating the team’s solidarity with Ukraine.
“We are thinking of the Ukrainians,” Ollé-Nicolle emphasized. “This war is a tragedy, and I don’t hesitate to say that I despise Putin for his actions.” The coach’s powerful words underscore the impact of the war on the world of sports and beyond, reminding us that even amidst competition, humanity must prevail.
football Stands in Solidarity: A Conversation with former England Striker, Gary Lineker
The world of sports has been deeply impacted by the ongoing conflict in ukraine, with athletes and organizations expressing their solidarity and condemning the violence. In light of the recent comments made by Didier Ollé-Nicolle,coach of the PSG women’s team,we sat down with former England striker and respected football pundit,Gary Lineker,to discuss the intersection of sport and international affairs.
Gary, Didier Ollé-Nicolle spoke of a premonition he felt regarding the conflict in Ukraine, recalling his unease even before the invasion. Do you think athletes have a responsibility to speak out on political issues, notably those with such global ramifications?
“I think athletes, like anyone else, have a right and a responsibility to speak out on issues they feel strongly about. It’s especially important when it comes to something as devastating as war. These are real people’s lives being impacted, and silence can be perceived as tacit acceptance.
Didier’s experience of visiting Kharkiv just months before the conflict, seeing the resilience of the Ukrainian people, is a powerful reminder of the human cost of this tragedy. Athletes often have a platform that allows them to reach a vast audience, and I believe using that platform to advocate for peace and human rights is commendable.”
Some argue that sports should remain separate from politics. Do you agree with that view?
“I understand the sentiment. Many people look to sports as an escape from the harsh realities of the world. However, to pretend that sports exist in a vacuum, untouched by global events, is naive. Athletes are citizens of the world, and their concerns and beliefs are as valid as anyone else’s.
In this case, the conflict in Ukraine isn’t just a political issue; it’s a humanitarian crisis. When innocent lives are at stake, it transcends political boundaries. I believe it’s important for athletes to use their voices to raise awareness and call for peace.”
Didier Ollé-Nicolle praised athletes who are using their platform to speak out against the war, and we’ve seen many examples of this, from tennis players writing messages on camera to footballers donating to aid organizations. How effective do you think these actions are in influencing change?
“It’s difficult to measure the precise impact of individual actions, but I believe these gestures are meaningful. they raise awareness, spark conversations, and show solidarity with those affected. The cumulative effect of athletes speaking out can create a powerful momentum, putting pressure on governments and institutions to take action.
“It also sends a strong message that the international community stands with ukraine.”
What do you think the role of sports organizations should be in responding to such a crisis?
“Sports organizations have a responsibility to provide support and aid to those affected by the conflict. This can take many forms, from fundraising initiatives to helping relocate athletes and refugees. They also have a platform to denounce violence and promote peace.”
Gary, what message woudl you like to send to athletes wavering about speaking out on these issues?
“Speak your truth. Don’t be afraid to use your platform for good. Your voice matters. Even if you think it’s a small contribution, it can make a difference. Remember, silence is complicity. Choosing to speak out, to stand against injustice and support those in need, is a powerful act of solidarity.”
