“We are a sponsor in good and bad days”

Despite the turmoil caused by the arrival of Marc Overmars as technical director of Antwerp, the Port of Antwerp will remain the sponsor of the football club, confirmed the alderwoman in charge of the port and president of the board of directors Annick De Ridder (N-VA) to the daily Het Nieuwsblad on Thursday.

“With the Port of Antwerp, we are a sponsor in good and bad days,” Annick De Ridder told Nieuwsblad. “We will honor our annual commitment until the end of the season.” The port authority has received, from the club, “sufficient guarantees that this important ethical and societal issue will be dealt with with the necessary commitment and vigor” and is “favourably considering an extension of the collaboration with Antwerp”.

After Overmars’ engagement, several sponsors ended their collaboration with Antwerp. Overmars had just left Ajax after reports of inappropriate behavior towards female staff at the club.
