WGC Match Play: Scottie Scheffler winner in Austin and new world number one

Third win of the season (after the Phoenix Open and the AP Invitational), first WGC title and world number one spot. Scottie Scheffler’s week in Austin was more than productive. Winner with a score of 4 and 3 over Kevin Kisner (also one of the best match players on the planet), the American at the age of 25 made a career start that was rarely seen in professional men’s golf.

Turned pro in 2018, on the PGA Tour only since 2020, the former University of Texas (the same as Jordan Spieth) was one of the surprise guests of the last Ryder Cup last September. An edition where he also stuck a nice plate to Jon Rahm (4 and 3), future ex-world number one.

A match beast

Faced with his compatriot Kevin Kisner, yet almost invincible in Austin with 22 victories since 2016 on the Texas track, Scheffler will show more juice and go 3 up after six holes. Another point won at 14 (4 up) with his 3rd birdie of the day, just to win without the slightest challenge from the next hole, at 15.

Unhappy finalist of this same WGC Match Play last year, impeccable in the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits (2.5 points in three matches) but also winner of the US Amateur and three-time American university champion by team, it is a beast of match which goes up this Sunday on the roof of the world.
