Authorities from the National Secretariat of Sports and Leaders of different Indigenous Peoples held a meeting to advance in the selection of the athletes who will represent our country.
“The truth is that this is historic because it is the first time that we really meet with the National Sports Secretariat and it gives us the opportunity to show that we indigenous peoples exist and can represent our country with dignity,” Antonio said. He added that from now on they will start working to schedule the tournaments that should be promoted at the regional level and then a national meeting with the best.
Regarding what was projected, Vargas pointed out that “we were able to specify something important, which is the realization of a national championship with representatives of the two Regions of Paraguay. From there, the players who will represent Paraguay in the World Games of Indigenous Peoples will be selected”.
“This time there are more disciplines for which we are going to select athletes from indigenous peoples. Some are Traditional Archery, Spear Throwing, Speed Race, Endurance Race and Soccer, male and female. This is a very important initiative”, he insisted.
The meeting was led by the General Director of Sports of the SND, Lic. Ricardo Deggeller; and by the Indigenous Leadership, Alba Eiragi, who has accompanied the work of the National Sports Secretariat with the indigenous soccer teams, since the beginning of the project in 2015.
In addition to the leaders who came from both Regions of the country, young athletes from the communities of Curuguaty and Presidente Hayes participated in the meeting, who were enthusiastic about the opportunity to demonstrate their traditional sports as well as the possibility of being part of the Paraguayan team. of indigenous football, which for the first time will also have the women’s branch.
During the work meeting, the importance of working on a regulation for sporting events that will allow the selection of athletes who will represent the country in the ecumenical meeting of indigenous peoples was raised. Likewise, it was agreed that work meetings will be scheduled that allow the participation of the 19 indigenous peoples of our country.
