Maccabi Tel Aviv Seeks New Leadership: Xavi Pascual Emerges as Top Candidate
The coaching carousel continues to spin in the EuroLeague, with Maccabi Tel Aviv reportedly seeking a new leader following the departure of Ioannis Sfairopoulos. Israeli media outlets suggest that Xavi Pascual, currently at the helm of Zenit St. Petersburg, is the frontrunner for the position.
Pascual’s potential move hinges on his ability to disentangle himself from Zenit, a club facing significant challenges in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The suspension of international competitions and the exodus of foreign players have cast a shadow over Russian basketball, leaving Pascual’s future uncertain.
Sfairopoulos’s tenure at Maccabi ended abruptly in February after a controversial cup defeat against Hapoel Tel Aviv. The loss sparked outrage among Maccabi fans, who attempted to breach the team’s locker room, leading to police intervention to escort the coach to safety. Since then, Avi Even has been guiding the team, including their recent EuroLeague victory over Baskonia.
pascual’s contract with Zenit was extended for three seasons last summer, but the geopolitical landscape has shifted dramatically since then. Should he depart St. petersburg for Tel aviv, it would mark his third international coaching experience. Prior to his russian adventure, Pascual led Panathinaikos from 2016 to 2018.
While Pascual appears to be the preferred choice, Maccabi is reportedly considering other candidates. Among them is Andrea Trinchieri, the current coach of Bayern Munich. Trinchieri, whose contract with the German club runs until 2023, is seen as a viable option should negotiations with pascual falter.

welcome, everyone, to another exciting edition of “Inside teh EuroLeague”! Today, we’re diving deep into the coaching carousel that’s spinning furiously in the EuroLeague, with Maccabi Tel Aviv at its center. To break down the latest developments and offer expert insights,I’m delighted to welcome a true legend in the game,Coach David Blatt.
Coach Blatt, thanks for joining me.
David Blatt: Pleasure to be here. Always happy to discuss basketball.
Let’s get right into it. Maccabi Tel Aviv is reportedly looking for a new head coach, with Xavi Pascual emerging as the top candidate. What are your initial thoughts on this potential move?
David Blatt: Xavi Pascual is a highly respected coach with a proven track record in Europe. he’s achieved success at Panathinaikos and is doing a commendable job with Zenit St. Petersburg under challenging circumstances. However, leaving st. Petersburg amidst the turmoil caused by the situation in Ukraine won’t be easy. It’s a complex situation with many factors to consider.
You mentioned the ‘challenging circumstances’ in Russia. How much of an impact do you think the geopolitical landscape will have on Pascual’s decision?
David Blatt: It’s a meaningful factor. The uncertainty surrounding Russian basketball makes it a difficult situation for any coach, regardless of their contract. pascual is a family man; his primary concern will be the well-being of himself and his loved ones. Leaving St. Petersburg for Tel Aviv would mean stability and a fresh start in a competitive league.
Maccabi, of course, parted ways with Ioannis Sfairopoulos rather abruptly after a controversial cup defeat. Was that a fair assessment of his tenure, considering his previous successes with the team?
David Blatt: Coaching in Tel Aviv comes with immense pressure. The fans are passionate and demanding rightly so, given Maccabi’s rich history. While Sfairopoulos achieved notable successes in the past,it’s also true that the recent cup defeat brought to light some underlying issues within the team. Ultimately, the club made a decision based on what they believed was in the best interest of the team moving forward.
Looking at the larger picture, Maccabi has a history of making bold coaching decisions. Do you think Pascual is the right fit for this club, culturally and professionally?
David Blatt: Pascual is a skilled tactician with a strong understanding of European basketball. He’s proven his ability to build strong teams and achieve results. Culturally, I think he’d be a good fit for Maccabi. He’s known for being a disciplined and demanding coach, which aligns with the club’s high standards.
Before we wrap up, what message would you give to Maccabi fans who might be apprehensive about another coaching change?
David Blatt: Change is always difficult, but it can also be an chance for growth and renewal. Maccabi is a club with a winning tradition, and I believe they will make the best decision for the future. Fans should trust the process, support the team, and look forward to an exciting new chapter.
I couldn’t agree more, Coach. Thank you for sharing your valuable insights with us today. Cheers to everyone out there – let’s keep the basketball conversation going!
