The Senator’s statement said Melnik’s cause of death was an illness “with which he was confident and discouraged.” The statement does not explain what caused the billionaire’s death. In 2015, Melnik underwent a liver transplant.
Melnik, whose two parents were born in Ukraine, bought the Senator in 2003 for $ 92 million. In 2007, the Ottawa club made it to the final of the Stanley Cup, where they lost 1-4 to Anaheim’s Ducks.
Melnik’s assets are estimated at $ 1.21 billion. The businessman was also well known in Canada as a horse breeder and owned many top-level racing rumaks. In 2013, Melnik reduced his involvement in horse racing, but in 2017 he was admitted to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
