American Hunter Armstrong sets new 50m backstroke world record

A record achieved in selections for the world championships.

Hunter Armstrong set a new world record in the 50m backstroke, swimming the distance in 23.71 seconds, during the USA Trials for the World Swimming Championships on Thursday in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Hunter Armstrong, 21, an Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo with the 4x100m medley relay, erased from the shelves the previous reference mark of 23.80 secs established by the Russian Kliment Kolesnikov, during the European championships in Budapest on May 18, 2021.

«I don’t know what to say, honestly. It’s something I’ve always wanted and I’m in heaven right now“, declared, flabbergasted, the young American, after having logically validated his qualification for the next Worlds which will also be held in the Hungarian capital from June 18 to July 3.

Caeleb Dressel, seven-time Olympic gold medalist, has confirmed his ticket for the 100m butterfly, after the 100m freestyle and the 50m butterfly. The American, who set the world record for the 100m butterfly (49.45 secs) by winning Olympic gold in Tokyo last year, had the best world performance of the year in 50.01 in the heats, before winning the final in 50.20.

On the women’s side, Torri Huske won the women’s 100 butterfly in 56.28, also setting the ERA of the year.
