The City of Dolbeau-Mistassini is preparing to relaunch minor baseball in its municipality. This time, in hopes of hitting a home run, the local recreation department is teaming up with Baseball Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean to ensure a good start.
To successfully relaunch ball sports in Dolbeau-Mistassini, a plan has been drawn up to do things right.
“We will obviously be launching registrations shortly, but in order to attract as many young people as possible, we are going to hold a baseball school towards the end of May or the beginning of June. It will be a kind of small initiation camp in which young people can participate for free and register later if they wish to continue, ”says Paul Morel, from the recreation department.
Moreover, if registrations are good, it is quite possible that Dolbeau-Mistassini will join the regional circuit this summer.
“That would obviously be the goal. Remember that about five years ago, we tried to revive baseball, but our young people only played internally. It had worked well for a year, but the following season, registrations had dropped significantly. Now that we are working in collaboration with Baseball Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, it would be a big advantage to join the regional circuit this summer. »
Interest
For now, the City is mainly looking to build a pool of players aged between 6 and 12 years old. However, it is very open to receiving registrations from 13-17 year olds.
“Currently, we feel that we would be successful with the 6-12 year olds, but there could be changes. If we see that we have a lot of registrations among 13-17 year olds, the plan could change and we will adjust. We are in the process of studying the file. »
Paul Morel believes that the raise could be a good success, whereas for a little while now, more and more parents approach him about baseball.
“Especially since this winter, many parents have come to talk to me about it and show interest. And the arrival of a new field next year has certainly awakened everything. »
He also hopes to be able to create a good succession of young people in baseball.
“The adult leagues want to expand. If we succeed in our relaunch, we have good hopes of creating a succession. »
