The coveted event, which aims to create a platform for young people to showcase their athletic excellence and offers universities across India a chance to showcase their supremacy outside of the curriculum, is set to start on 24 April and end on May 3.

More than 4,500 participants representing around 190 universities will compete for top honors in 20 different sports, including indigenous sports like Mallakhamba and yogasana first introduced at Khelo India 2021 University Games.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Dr. KC Narayana Gowda, Minister of Youth Empowerment and Sports said, “We are absolutely delighted to host the second edition of Khelo India University Games at Jain University. While 13 disciplines including weightlifting, wrestling, judo, kabaddi, volleyball, swimming, malkhambha, yogasana, archery, fencing, karate, boxing and football, will be held at the Jain University Global Campus.

Football, Table Tennis, Badminton and Tennis will take place at Jain Sports School and Shooting will take place at SAI, Southern Centre. Both campuses feature world-class infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment for athletic excellence.

A newly laid synthetic turf for athletics at Kanteerava Stadium will be used for the first time at the Khelo India University Games, while a renovated Marshal Cariappa Stadium awaits hockey teams to take to the pitch.

The Karnataka government has also taken the initiative to make it a unique event by promoting environmental sustainability.

Calling the Games ‘Green Games’, organizers will ensure there is no use of single-use plastic at venues, the Games will serve food at all venues with reusable cutlery and provide storage and separate waste management.

She added, “The Khelo India Games are unique because we host them every year in association with a new state, ensuring that the culture of the sport spreads across the country. The first edition of KIUG was held in Odisha and was a major success with around 3150 athletes participating in KIUG 2022 which is organized by the Government of Karnataka, the numbers increased by 50% with over 4500 athletes participating.

“The popularity and importance of KIUG continues to grow. In the inaugural edition held in 2020, Punjab University won the overall champion title and Savitribai Phule Pune University won the runners-up title.

Mangalore University brought glory to Karnataka State by finishing 5th in total medals with a total of 25 medals and this year’s host Jain Deemed-to-be University finished seventh in total with a total of 16 medals.
