Etrigny. The bird-killer, an ancestral tradition for archers

Archery, a defense and game weapon, already existed long before the Middle Ages, at the time of Charlemagne. Archers from the four corners of France perpetuate the traditions of competition linked to bird shooting. The bird killer today consists of dropping a wooden bird measuring 5 by 2 centimeters, attached to the center of a target. The shots are made at 50 meters. The winner of this competition is named “Roy of the company” for the year. Young people also participate and obtain the title of “kinglets”.

Saturday morning at Etrigny , 21 archers were present with their bow and the targets made by the former “Roy”. It was Jean-François Barault who won the scarf this year and obtained the title. On April 12, he will join the other competitors from Burgundy to, perhaps, become the “Roy de Ronde de Bourgogne”, and why not later the “Roy de Ronde de France”.
