Ex-Colombia player Freddy Rincon in critical condition after road accident

The 55-year-old ex-player “was operated for 2 hours 45 minutes (…) and his vital prognosis is engaged”, he added. A hospital spokesperson previously said Rincon arrived with a “serious traumatic brain injury”.

The crash happened around 4:00 a.m. (11:00 a.m. HB) when a Cali Transit System bus and “a van carrying four passengers collided,” according to Edwing Candelo, the local undersecretary for the mobility. He also said he spoke to a passenger in the van who allegedly named Freddy Rincon as the driver.

Nicknamed “El Coloso” (the colossus, editor’s note), Rincon was one of the stars of the Colombian national team during the 1990 World Cup in Italy and the golden generation qualified for three consecutive World Cups (1990, 1994 and 1998).

He played for Real Madrid (Spain), Naples (Italy), Palmeiras and Corinthians (Brazil) and America de Cali (Colombia).

“All our strength and affection for Freddy Rincon after his accident today. We are wholeheartedly with him and wish that he recovers quickly from this difficult moment”, reacted Real Madrid on Twitter.
