Football: Barcelona are targeting second place

Soccer

Five wins in a row, most recently the magnificent 4-0 win in the “Clasico” at Real Madrid: After a weak start under coach Xavi, FC Barcelona found their way back to top form in the decisive phase of the season. On Sunday (9:00 p.m.) the Catalans have the chance to beat Sevilla FC in a direct duel with a home win from second place and become the first pursuer of Real Madrid.

In the first game of the season, Barca drew 1-1 in Seville on December 21, 2021. Since then, however, the signs have changed significantly. Barca are 13 unbeaten in the league, winning nine times. Recently there have been two clear victories. First they defeated CA Osasuna 4:0, a round later they won the “Clasico” in Madrid also 4:0.

Seville, on the other hand, is weakening from week to week. Seven draws in nine rounds made it impossible to remain fully in the title race. 0-0 at Alaves, 1-1 at Rayo Vallecano and 0-0 at Real Sociedad were the most recent winless results. The gap to leaders Real Madrid grew from game to game. Barcelona are the same back on points lost as the third has played a game less.

After a bumpy start to the season, Barcelona has now returned to its former strength under coach Xavi

“We are on the right path”

Coupled with the portion of self-confidence after the sensational guest appearance at the Bernabeu, the Xavi squad is still flirting with the really big coup. “We still have our chances in the league, all we can do is win and hope,” said captain Sergio Busquets. At least their own part they want to continue to do with flying colours. “We’re on the right track and in good shape.” The duel with Sevilla is also the dress rehearsal for the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals at Eintracht Frankfurt.
