Football: Bayern celebrates late against Augsburg

In the 3-2 home win of 1. FC Köln against FSV Mainz 05, Dejan Ljubicic and Karim Onisiwo made their mark on the shooting list. Cologne improved to seventh place, Mainz are still tenth.

Borussia Mönchengladbach, with coach Adi Hütter, left the last worries of relegation behind with a 2-0 win at Greuther Fürth, who was at the bottom of the table. ÖFB team defender Stefan Lainer got a penalty. VfL Wolfsburg was also able to gain some breathing room, with Xaver Schlager moving eight points away from the relegation zone thanks to a 4-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld. On the other hand, Hertha BSC are worried about relegation. In the derby against Union Berlin with Christopher Trimmel, it was 1: 4 for Felix Magath’s team.

Bayern increases after a break

In the first half, the Munich team followed up on the poor performance in the 0-1 draw in Spain on Wednesday and never shot at the Augsburg goal. After the change of sides, however, a significant increase was noticeable. While there was still bad luck when Robert Lewandowski (46th) hit the bar, a converted hand self-kick by the Polish star striker in the 82nd minute brought the late decision. It was the 32nd league goal of the season for the 33-year-old.

Bayern are still nine points ahead of pursuers Borussia Dortmund after the 29th round. BVB had already won 2-0 at VfB Stuttgart on Friday. Augsburg lost again after two wins and is in 14th place. Michael Gregoritsch only came on the field in the 78th minute after surviving the coronavirus infection.

Cologne turns 0:2 against Mainz

Cologne had to catch up after being two goals behind, also because Onisiwo drew on the goal from the side in the 55th minute and completed the goal from an acute angle into the far corner. It was goal number five of the season for the 30-year-old ÖFB team striker. But it wasn’t enough for Mainz to win points, also because Cologne’s “Joker” provided fresh impetus.

Two of them were Austrians, Louis Schaub and Ljubicic. The two played a key role in the 2-2: Schaub initiated the attack, Ljubicic was lucky in the penalty area and slammed the ball into the corner. The 24-year-old celebrated his second goal of the season in the 78th minute. With Luca Kilian (82nd), of all things, a loan from Mainz became the match winner.

Mandatory victory for Gladbach, Derby clearly goes to Union

Gladbach won 2-0 against Fürth thanks to goals from Marcus Thuram (18th) and Alassane Plea (24th/penalty). The penalty kick was only awarded after a VAR delay of several minutes. Lainer was brought down in the penalty area during a nice dribbling. Fürth hardly has a realistic chance of staying up.

It will also be tight for the penultimate Hertha. The 1: 4 against Union was the third competitive defeat against the city rivals this season. Hertha only managed to equalize with an own goal before Grischa Prömel (53′), Sheraldo Becker (74′) and Sven Michel (85′) shot out the clear victory for the “Iron”. The Berlin Olympic Stadium was sold out with 74,667 spectators.

In Wolfsburg’s win against Bielefeld, not only football was in the foreground. Arminia full-back Cedric Brunner was carried off the field after a header duel with Jonas Wind after minutes of treatment. There was a slight all-clear to the effect that the kicker was conscious. Just last week, Fabian Klose injured his head on the side of Bielelfeld.

The guests, with Manuel Prietl, Alessandro Schöpf and Patrick Wimmer in the starting line-up, seemed shocked, which is why VfL had an easy time of it. Lukas Nmecha scored twice (11th, 38th), Maximilian Arnold (48th / free kick) and Max Kruse (53rd) once. Bielefeld is one point behind the 15th Stuttgart on the relegation place.
