Football: Lyon swept away, Marseille qualified

Gdisappointment for Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League. The Lyonnais were swept 3-0 at home by Londoners West Ham after a 1-1 draw in the first leg. The English scored in quick succession just before the break by Craig Dawson (38e) and Declan Rice (44e), then dashed OL’s hopes in the second half with a third goal by Jarrod Bowen (48e).

A rout which very probably deprives OL of their last chance to qualify for a European Cup next season and which angered Lyon supporters after the match. Some of them came out of the North Bend to vigorously shake the metal barriers intended to prevent ground invasions. A few stewards were mistreated.

L’OL, 10e of Ligue 1, will now have to find the recipe very quickly to succeed in the league which he has not been able to do in 31 days if he wants to hang on to a European qualification in extremis. If it fails, the Rhone club, which lost its first match in C3 this Thursday evening in 2021-2022, would not play in European competition for the second time in three years, which would not be without economic consequences. OL will already have to overcome this immense European disappointment on Sunday with the reception of Bordeaux, 19e who is playing his survival in Elite (5:05 p.m.). Otherwise the end of the season risks being long for OL and their supporters.

OM at the top

OM, for their part, were not impressed: very superior technically despite the absences, Marseille mastered PAOK Salonika and their thunderous supporters to win Thursday 1-0 in Greece after the 2-1 of the go and reach the last four of the Europa League Conference. This semi-final, the 8e in OM’s European history, will be played against Feyenoord Rotterdam, who defeated Slavia Prague, with a first leg on April 28 in the Netherlands and the return on May 5 at the Vélodrome.

After the serious incidents of the first leg in Marseille, hell had been promised to OM at Toumba, this stadium from another age, all concrete and rusty metal, full to the brim on Thursday, and it was probably a bit excessive.
