Tiger Woods is back 25 years after his Augusta coup and 14 months after his serious car accident. At the Masters, he wows the crowds and keeps his chances of winning.
Golf superstar Tiger Woods celebrated an excellent comeback at the Masters in Augusta 14 months after his serious car accident. The 46-year-old Californian finished his first round on Thursday with 71 strokes on the hilly, par-72 course at Augusta National Golf Club. Thousands of adoring fans watched the 15-time Major winner perform at the magnificent Magnolia Lane facility. “I’m exactly where I need to be,” Woods told ESPN.
Germany’s golf legend Bernhard Langer ended his first round with a score of four over par. Two bogeys on holes 17 and 18 gave the 64-year-old a significantly better result. When the oldest competitor finished, other competitors were still playing. The Australian Cameron Smith had completed the best round at this point with 68 strokes.
Woods hit the first tee at 5:04 p.m. (CEST) in a pink shirt and black trousers to thunderous cheers. At the end of the round, the crowd’s favorite was one stroke below the course standard after 18 holes. The leg, which was broken several times in the accident in February 2021, did not appear to cause him any major problems when walking.
25 years after the coup
The comeback announcement of Woods, who feared losing his right leg after the accident south of Los Angeles, had the golfing world in a frenzy and eclipsed everything else about the 86th Masters. When asked by a journalist whether he believed himself capable of winning the Masters again, Woods answered with a clear “Yes, I do”.
25 years ago, Woods made golf history at the Masters with his first major win. In 1997, he won his first of five Masters titles by a record twelve shots.
Also in 2001, 2002 and 2005 the US star was allowed to put on the green winner’s jacket. Title number five followed in 2019. After a long period of suffering with personal low points, injuries and numerous operations, it was one of the greatest and most emotional comebacks in sports history.
