Austria Klagenfurt beats WAC 2-1 in the Carinthian Derby. The Wolfsbergers slip to the end of the table in the master group.
Austria Klagenfurt has ended a dry spell in the Bundesliga and, after six unsuccessful attempts, has won again. The promoted team beat WAC 2-1 in the Carinthian Derby on Sunday and thus moved past their local rivals in fifth place in the championship group. After goals from Michael Liendl (16th), Alex Timossi Andersson (3rd) and Florian Jaritz (17th), it was the fifth bankruptcy in a row for Wolfsberger.
Here are all the details about the game
The game in the Lavanttal Arena started rapidly. Thorsten Röcher failed after 16 seconds from a tight angle at Klagenfurt keeper Philip Menzel and 30 seconds later steered a Liendl cross volley from five over the crossbar. In contrast, the Klagenfurt wrote with their first chance. Patrick Greil freed Timossi Andersson in a transition situation, the Swede used the space, moved into the box and finished with a precise low shot into the far corner.
The response from the WAC followed a quarter of an hour later. Liendl was able to get a cross from Matthäus Taferner in the penalty area and scored via the inside post to make it 1-1. But shortly afterwards, Austria from Klagenfurt was back in the lead. A cross from Timossi Andersson flew over Wolfsberg goalie Alexander Kofler and Jaritz headed in from close range.
Wolfsberger unimaginative
After that, the guests mostly let the Wolfsbergers have the ball, but Robin Dutt’s team presented themselves unimaginative and, with the exception of a Taferner shot right at Menzel (23rd) before the break, had nothing to offer. The second half started like the first – with a Röcher chance. This time the offensive player found his master after 38 seconds in Menzel.
The WAC only became dangerous again in the 75th minute, again through Röcher, whose header flew a few meters past the goal from a good position. In between, Klagenfurt professional Christopher Cvetko hammered the ball into the post after a Taferner error (62′). In the finish, Austria brought the lead relatively unchallenged over time and thus appeased their coach Peter Pacult. Before the start of the game, the Viennese was annoyed in the Sky interview that his captain’s castling had come to light prematurely.
The “Kronen Zeitung” reported on Sunday about the loop change from Kosmas Gkezos to Markus Pink. “We must have a mole,” guessed Pacult. Only a small circle knew about it. The coach did not want to justify or overestimate the change of captain. “That’s not so important,” stressed Pacult.
