At 4 pm on the 12th, the Sports Council and the Sports for the Disabled held a meeting to establish a cooperative system for sports organizations to improve the national sports medicine and science support system in the conference room of the Olympic Culture Center in Bangi-dong, Seoul. By analyzing the problems of the current national sports medicine and science support for the disabled and non-disabled, they decided to come up with a plan to actively utilize the live sports medicine and science data from the training site, and pledged to collaborate and cooperate to completely improve the training support system.

Currently, both organizations are in charge of technical guidance, professional manpower support, injury prevention and rehabilitation, diet and nutrition management, and lifestyle guidance, which are most of the functions for national team training. However, some sports medicine and scientific functions, such as physical fitness measurement and sports dynamics, are dualized to the Sports Policy Science Institute under the National Sports Promotion Corporation. It is analyzed that there was a limit to support for sports medicine and science integration through the basic data management of the team and the collection of on-site opinions.

Accordingly, in 2019, Loughborough University, UK, and the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) signed a business agreement to improve performance through sports science support. The know-how, such as power analysis and mental coaching, accumulated through sports science seminars for the past three years (2019-2021), which was held by inviting domestic and foreign sports science-related researchers, has been introduced to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympics. However, it is a situation that is insufficient compared to other developed countries that provide one-stop support for sports medicine and science in real time in the field.

Both organizations agreed that it is urgent to unify the national sports medicine and science support system in order to fundamentally improve this limitation. It is argued that cutting-edge equipment based on artificial intelligence (AI), which is a global trend, and experts in each field should be placed at the training site to prepare a foothold for Korean sports to take another leap forward.

“Unifying the national sports medical science support system must be done to enhance Korea’s sports competitiveness, regardless of disabled and non-disabled sports,” said Jeong Jin-wan, chairman of the Korea Sports Association for the Disabled. He urged the government, the government, and athletes to join forces.”
