An early departure from Istanbul is out of the question for the 2014 world champion despite being kicked out of the squad.

Ex-national player Mesut Özil wants to stay at Fenerbahce despite his suspension. That was what his adviser Erkut Sögüt said on the Turkish radio station League Radio clear. Özil will fulfill his contract, which runs until 2024, according to Sögüt: “He wants to make his contribution. He wants to play, he wants to stay on the field for 90 minutes.”

Fenerbahce had thrown Özil out of the squad last week without giving any reasons for the decision. The Turkish national player Ozan Tufan is no longer part of the third-placed team for the time being.

Fenerbahce denies salary speculation

Fenerbahce recently rejected speculation that Özil did not want to play because of unpaid salaries. Corresponding reports have “nothing to do with the truth,” said the club.

According to Sögüt, Özil is currently only on leave. A final decision on a suspension is still pending.
