Major League Baseball announced Monday afternoon that Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and Ty France of the Seattle Mariners shared the American League Player of the Week award, while the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger of Los Angeles, was recognized in the National League.
Cabrera went 7-for-18 (.389) including his historic 3,000th hit on Saturday against Antonio Senzatela, in the first inning of the Bengals’ 13-0 win over the Colorado Rockies at Comerica Park. The Venezuelan legend became the 33rd member of the exclusive 3,000 hit club and only the seventh hitter in history to combine that figure with at least 500 home runs.
It is the sixteenth time that Miggy has received the distinction in his career and the first since October 2, 2016.
Cabrera rounded out his performance with a .450 OBP, .389 slugging percentage and .839 OPS, while hitting the rubber three times and driving in twice, receiving an intentional walk and getting hit once, while striking out six times. in five meetings between April 19 and 23.
During that period, he surpassed his compatriot Luis Aparicio (2,599) in the number of disputed challenges, with 2,601; Puerto Rican Carlos Beltrán (11,031) in seat 38 with 11,046 legal appearances at the plate; Eddie Mathews (1,509) in step 69 with 1,511 runs scored; Roberto Clemente (3,000) in position 32 with 3,002 hits. Additionally, he tied for 258th all-time with Ernie Banks, Mike Epstein, Derrek Lee, Evan Longoria, Heinie Manush, Johnny Mostil and Dan Uggla with 70 hits. He also raised his games with three or more hits to 241, breaking a tie with Sam Crawford for 34th in MLB annals and leveled with Honus Wagner and Albert Pujols, according to Baseball- Reference.
Of that group of players, Aparicio, Mathews, Clemente, Banks, Manush, Crawford and Wagner have plaques in the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.
On the season, Cabrera has a .319/.377/.362 offensive line, with two doubles, five RBIs and a .739 OPS in 14 games.
