MLB: New York Yankees give Gregorio Petit bad news | SPORTS

Venezuelan infielder Gregorio Petit was dropped from the MLB to the minor leagues on Tuesday by the New York Yankees in a move that gave pitcher Chase Whitley a spot on the 25-player roster. His new team is the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in the triple-A International League.

During 13 games in the majors, the Venezuelan went 5-for-24 with a .208 average, including three doubles, five RBIs, four runs scored and three walks. Whitley’s arrival will surely be short-lived, as the Yankees have yet to activate fellow Venezuelan José Pirela, who is recovering in the minors (specifically in triple-A) from a blow to the head during a preseason game.

New York brought Gregorio Petit from the Houston Astros on April 1, precisely after Pirela’s injury, who was emerging as the Bronx Bombers’ utility player at least at the beginning of the season.
