The Kansas City Chiefs traded wideout Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for multiple draft picks on Wednesday, and the Florida squad signed him to a four-year, $120 million contract, making him the the highest paid player at his position.
The Chiefs will get the Dolphins’ first, second and fourth round picks in the next draft, in addition to getting their fourth and sixth round picks next year.
With this transaction, the Chiefs especially free up a lot of space under the salary cap, $18 million to be exact.
“It’s hard to express what Tyreek Hill meant to the Chiefs,” Missouri roster general manager Brett Veach said. He is an outstanding player, one of the best in the history of this club. (…) It was a difficult decision to make, but we believe it was the best for the interests of the club and Tyreek. »
Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said $72.2 million of the new Dolphins contract is guaranteed. The value of this contract surpasses that of five years that Davante Adams signed after being traded from Green Bay to Las Vegas, which accounts for an annual average of $28.5 million and contains $67.5 million guaranteed.
The Chiefs were in talks with Hill about a contract extension, partly because they were hoping for some salary cap flexibility. But the talks have bogged down in recent days, and Hill’s representatives have demanded a settlement. Several offers from all over the league were quickly tabled, and it was ultimately the Dolphins who won the prize pool.
Hill was a controversial fifth-round pick of the Chiefs in the 2015 draft, a year after he was charged with hitting his wife and was kicked off the team at Oklahoma State University. Three years ago, prosecutors in a Kansas City suburb declined to bring charges following an alleged incident of domestic abuse involving his fiancée and their 3-year-old child.
On the court, Hill exceeded all expectations. He helped the Chiefs win back-to-back All-American titles and the franchise’s first Super Bowl in 2019. He had the best season of his career last year, with 111 catches for 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns .
In six seasons, he has already caught 479 passes for 6,630 yards and 56 majors.
