Jordan Spieth pared on the first overtime hole against Patrick Cantlay to win the Heritage Tournament with a -13 cumulative card.
The Texan pulled off a superb pit exit to save the par, while Cantlay failed to save the par after being stuck in the same bunker as his rival.
“I felt in a good position. I just needed to give myself a chance. It’s an extraordinary feeling”, rejoiced Spieth.
The latter, who was in 9th place the day before, returned a card of 66, thanks in particular to two eagles at No. 2 and No. 5 (3 birdies, 2 bogeys) to climb to the top. He was joined by Cantlay, when the latter made his 4th birdie of the day on the No. 17, to total -13 like him.
Spieth landed eagles on the 2nd and 5th holes to build momentum for his round.
Spieth had entered two strokes behind Cantlay before the start of the final round. He went 66 to Cantlay’s 68 to force overtime. Seven golfers finished the tournament at -12, including Australia’s Cam Davis who shone with a final round of 63.
The leader after 54 holes, American Harold Varner III turned in a 70, missing overtime by one stroke. He finished tied for third at -12.
Spieth recorded a 13th victory on the PGA Tour and a second straight on Easter Sunday. He ended a four-year drought without a win by winning the Valero Texas Open in 2021.
Next year, the final round of the Masters Tournament will take place on Easter Sunday.
Cam Davis (63), Varner (70), JT Poston (64), Cameron Young (66), Sepp Straka (68) and Matt Kuchar (68) joined Lowry tied for third.
By virtue of a round of 69, Corey Conners was the highest-ranked Canadian in the tournament, tied for 12th place. His compatriots Adam Hadwin (69) and Adam Svensson (71) both finished 26th while Roger Sloan (73) settled for a tie for 59th.
