PGA: Palmer at the controls at the halfway mark

American Ryan Palmer will enter the weekend rounds of the Valero Texas Open well in control, at the top of the standings, after posting a clear round on Friday’s second day of action in San Antonio.

The 45-year-old hit the white object 66 (-6) times on his second down on the TPC San Antonio course, posting a cumulative 134 (-10) after 36 holes.

Palmer will enter the third round with a two-stroke lead over his closest pursuers, a trio of golfers made up of South African Dylan Frattelli, as well as Americans Matt Kuchar and Kevin Chappell. The latter managed a tour de force in his second round, subtracting seven shots from par 72, to make an impressive jump of 51 positions.

Adam Hadwin is the best placed Canadian after the first 36 holes. For the second time in as many attempts, he returned a card of 70 (-2) and is tied for 22nd place. Corey Conners is a little behind his compatriot and rests in 27th place.

Roger Sloan also avoided being a victim of the ax. The Maple Leaf member hit pars on each of the first 11 pennants, before committing a bogey on the 12th. Four birdies on his last six holes, however, gave him access to the weekend rounds. He is tied for 62nd place with a cumulative 143 (-1).

Adam Svensson (144; E), Michael Gligic (145; +1) and Nick Taylor (146; +2) did not have the same luck and saw their tournament end prematurely.
