Everything would have been arranged for the big promotion party, but Padova proved to be a spoilsport on Saturday in the summit meeting with FC Südtirol. And yet: the 5,100 fans in the brand-new, atmospheric Drusus Stadium cheered after the final whistle.

FC Südtirol broke Padova’s eight-game winning streak and defended their lead with a 0-0 lead. Now the White-Reds have everything in their own hands in the last matchday in the away game in Trieste. A draw is enough for them to bag the historic promotion to Serie B – provided Padova does not win more than 2-0 against Virtus Verona at the same time. In the long-distance duel between the two title aspirants, the goal difference counts.
At the end of the meager zero number, the FCS fans not only celebrated the advantageous starting position in the big title showdown, but also because they could completely rely on Fortuna, goddess of luck, on this Saturday afternoon. The few really good chances of the game all came from the former Serie A club from Veneto, who were accompanied to Bolzano by around 1,800 fans.
At FC Südtirol, a strong defense, goalkeeper Giacomo Poluzzi and aluminum prevented the fall from the top of the table. At the same time, the absence of captain Fabian Tait (he was injured in the final training session) in midfield was noticeable for the home side, as was the playfulness of Daniele Casiraghi, who initially stewed on the bench. FCS kept Padova in check with team spirit.
In a nutshell: the highlights of the game
First excitement | In the 26th minute, it gets dangerous for the first time in front of the FCS goal. Ajeti rises to the header and balances the ball on goal. Goalkeeper Poluzzi is there. |
Latte and a whistle | For the first time, the FCS fans are ripped off their seats: Michael De Marchi hammers the leather onto the lower edge of the slats. At the same time, however, an offside whistle echoes through the stadium (27th). |
Off to the second | After a through ball from Casriaghi, Rover puts the ball in. However, he is just offside and the goal is disallowed (68′). |
FCS in aluminum happiness | After a corner, Ceravolo steers the ball out of the fray and onto the crossbar. Great luck for FC Südtirol, because Padova was only centimeters short of the lead (76th). |
One last shock | Substitute Pelagatti gets a free header from 5 yards out, but Poluzzi saves FCS with a brilliant save (92′). |
