BARCELONA, 4 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell-Trofeo Conde de Godó will be “the first tournament” on the circuit organized by the ATP to officially certify its carbon footprint in its 69th edition, which will be held in Barcelona from April 16 to 24.
For the calculation of its carbon footprint, the tournament will have the support of Global Omnium, a national company in the management of the integral water cycle, which will measure all the emissions generated, directly and indirectly, by the tournament.
This measurement involves energy consumption, waste management, ‘catering’, transfers of players and the public, as explained by the organization in a statement.
This environmental indicator is an instrument used to determine and evaluate the impact of an activity on climate change. AENOR, the certification entity in Spain, will be in charge of ensuring that the events organized by the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 follow the sustainability criteria.
“It is a satisfaction to be able to carry out this work through the contribution of our knowledge and technological capacity to measure and calculate the carbon footprint of one of the most prestigious clay court tennis tournaments in the world, linking this exercise to the measurement at the same time of the water footprint of the tournament”, said Juan Luis Pozo, Director of Sustainability of the Global Omnium Group.
For his part, Javier Mejía, Director of Marketing and Business Development at AENOR, added that the fight against climate change is
“everyone’s responsibility”. For this reason, he highlighted the certificates, which recognize “the best practices” and help “build trust” among the public of the real commitment “they have with the planet.”
The calculation of the carbon footprint is “one more step on the path of excellence” that the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 and the rest of the tournament organizers have been taking for years, the note points out.
