Augusta National’s extremely hilly course has been a hot topic of conversation over the past week. Mainly because all observers wondered if Tiger Woods could return there with a badly damaged right leg following his serious road accident in February 2021. But for Helen Westwood, it is also the most trying course on which she had to carry her husband’s bag!
wife and shopping cart Lee Westwood for several years now, Helen Westwood was questioned by our colleagues from Sun on his mission to Augusta. In particular, she explained that she “sometimes felt like an octogenarian” with Lee’s bag on his back
“Augusta is without a doubt the toughest course I have ever caddyed on – and the idea of riding the 8th hole always fills me with dread,” she says.
“The hole is all uphill and the slope is steep! I feel like it is 45 degrees the full length of the hole” she added.
As if I smoked 60 cigarettes a day!
Fitness teacher and therefore well trained, she suffers a lot on this endless par 5. “When I arrive on the green, I am totally out of breath. It’s as if I smoked 60 cigarettes a day! »
Television does not capture the great elevations of the course well and Helen Westwood has learned to be wary of it. As a result, she tries to lighten her husband’s bag as much as possible.
Eliminate the superfluous!
“Before the start, I look at everything in the bag and I ask this kind of question: “ Do we really need that water bottle? There’s water on every tee ”. We played a practice game with Shane Lowry and I weighed his bag, and mine was much heavier. I could have sworn Lee was hiding some cinder blocks or dumbbells there if I hadn’t checked it carefully. »
Helen has been carrying her husband’s bag since 2018 and also explains how odd it was to caddy at the 2020 Masters when there were no fans in Augusta.
