For the third time in history, and in something that did not happen 34 years ago, the three so-called great teams lost their matches on two dates of the same First Division Championship.
Colo Colo, Universidad de Chile and Universidad Católica fell on the fourth date against Huachipato (0-1), O’Higgins (0-1) and Palestino (2-3), respectively. And now, on matchday nine, they lost to Unión Española (1-2), Coquimbo Unido (0-1) and La Serena (0-2).
This situation had occurred in the 1950 tournament, when these three teams lost their matches on days 2 and 14. Then it was repeated in the 1988 tournament, consecutively on dates 8 and 9.
How many times did the big three lose their games on the same date?
In the history of the First Division of Chilean soccer, only 22 times the three so-called great teams lost on the same date.
The first time it happened was on date 13 of the 1943 contest, when the Albos lost to Badminton (0-3), the Blues against Green Cross (1-4) and the Crusaders against Unión Española (1-5). In this century, only eight times Colo Colo, the U and the UC fell on the same day.
